Enter/Exit is the accompanying live performance
within SuddenlyHISTORY.
The project explores the impact of live improvised dance in simultaneous
union with recorded media from previous productions in our history,
and with live video.
Similar to SuddenlyHISTORY,
the nature of Enter/Exit is to invent and create
spontaneously. This allows us to add and subtract elements of the
past and to reveal new artistic connections within future performances.
As example in the above video clip, dancer David Ferguson improvises
to the soundtrack from 1993's Opium, with video projection featuring
footage from 2000's The
Human Voice inter-cut with 1997's Sanctuary. Also present is
a live video perspective seen on a second screen, in which Ferguson
alternates performing to the camera (which records the footage seen
on the second screen) and the audience.
The title piece within the Program is also a repertory concept.
Enter/Exit is a recipe or game involving a group
of dancers, a videographer, a musician, and a light operator. The
participants must all consider the light and each others actions.
The light operator opens the stage with his choice of geometric
spotlight. Dancers choose to enter the light, yet when they choose
to exit, the light is removed. At the same time, the videographer
roams the stage recording live footage, which is projected elsewhere.
The musician is also free to move about, choosing how to respond
to the dancers and the light. The piece explores control within
improvisations and guerilla filmmaking.
