keystone

September 14 - 17 at the InFrinGinG Dance Festival, Nanaimo
September 21 and 23, 2006 at the Metro Studio Theatre, Victoria

"A stone can be an offering, a vessel, a statue, a tool;
a pediment, a pedestal, an altar, a marker, a sign;
a fossil, a mountain, a continent, a molten core;
a shelter, a labyrinth, a cave, a monolith.
The condensed history of the universe.
Or Persephone's tunnel. A tunnel to climb back up into the world."

In 2003 Suddenly Dance Theatre presented Lori Hamar’s Affirmation, a live dance/media performance which explored the inner workings of the female psyche through an interior landscape of fantasies, memories, intuitions and desires. The performance featured live dance in an atmosphere of apparitions and illuminations.

This season, Director/Choreographer Lori Hamar uncovers the heart of the original work Affirmation to reveal keystone.

In keystone, Hamar delves further into the expression of the female psyche, drawing lines between integration and self-ownership. She embraces the work of visual designer Miles Lowry, composer Anna Hostman, and playwright Janet Munsil to further articulate experiences in physical, mental, spiritual and emotional realms. The animation of each of these ‘worlds’ invites a poetic link between integration and self-ownership encompassed in the image of a keystone: the central supporting element of a whole.

Engaging dancers Brandy Baybutt, Holly Bright, Jung-ah Chung and Mariko Ihara, keystone layers choreography, image, spoken word and improvisation to immerse the audience into the intensely intimate atmosphere of reflecting upon one’s self.
