CANADA’S SUDDENLY DANCE THEATRE ON TOUR TO SOUTH KOREA,
featuring dance artists Jung-ah Chung and David Ferguson.

Victoria, British Columbia: Suddenly Dance Theatre Society is pleased to announce our first international tour to South Korea will feature Two World Premieres by Canadian dance artists Jung ah Chung and David Ferguson.

Co-Choreographers Chung and Ferguson will perform by invitation in 3 cities, July 20 – Aug 8, 2008: in Seoul at the Korea World Dance Stars Festival 2008, with additional performances in Busan at the Busan International Beach Dance Festival, and in Kim Hae. The tour is produced by the Korean Government, International Performing Arts Project (IPAP), The City of Busan, The Korean Dance Association, and Suddenly Dance Theatre.

Two new dance works have been created for this tour: SKY EVENT (13 mins) and COURTYARD FOR A BIRD (14 mins) feature the fluid kinetic pairing of Jung-ah Chung and Suddenly Dance Theatre’s co-founder and Artistic co-Director David Ferguson. New music has been commissioned for this event by LA’s Eclipse Quartet and Victoria’s Miles Lowry (also Artistic co-Director of SDT). Lighting Design by James Proudfoot. Costume by Syreeta Wootton.

Suddenly Dance Theatre’s Tour to South Korea evolved from an initial invitation to South Korean born Jung ah Chung, who has become one of the most respected dance artists in Western Canada. She has worked with several prominent BC Dance Artists including Wen Wei Wang, Constance Cooke, Alvin Tolentino. With invitations coming from her native country, this tour represents an artist’s cultural and artistic evolution, and aims to highlight and inspire in both Korea and Canada.

Suddenly Dance Theatre will be representing Canada within the international dance community; other confirmed invited companies include: Swedish Ballet (Sweden), Finland National Ballet (Finland), Victor Ullate Ballet (Spain), Koresh Dance Company (USA) and NDT II (Holland). In addition to 8 performances, Ferguson and Chung will also lead workshops with Korean dance artists in hopes of creating future reciprocal performance opportunities for artists between Canada and South Korea.

Suddenly Dance Theatre has recently hit a stride of creating marks on the local and world map through live performance and touring, television broadcast, and film festivals. Through Suddenly Dance Theatre, Ferguson and Chung’s growing co-choreographic dance partnership has successfully created dance works for Canadian national television such as OPIUM (2005/2006) and the recently released Bravo!FACT film AISLING (2007/2008). All of these works have been created with SDT’s Artistic co-Director Miles Lowry, who will also be traveling to Korea to film the works for a 20th anniversary documentary about the company.

We gratefully acknowledge the support of The British Columbia Arts Council; The Capital Regional District Arts Development; The Canada Council for the Arts; and with the assistance of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. We thank our rehearsal sponsors Lynda Raino Dance and Victoria’s Dance Connection.

"Their (Jung-Ah Chung & David Ferguson) tense, tempestuous improvisations of the theme of elemental vertigo was a Romantic recognition of the sublime,... From an initiatory baptism in calm, glassy water, through Eros, terror, consummation, and bliss, Ferguson and Chung paint an abstract narrative of tempestuous union, surrender, and relinquishing." - Yvonne Owens, Vie des Arts magazine, Montreal 2005
