SuddenlyHISTORY:
A laboratory of Movement and Memory

An Installation marking
the ten year anniversary of
Suddenly Dance Theatre in Victoria.

October 4-11, 2002
@ Open Space Gallery, Victoria, B.C.

Created by David Ferguson and Miles Lowry

From the beginning, Suddenly Dance Theatre has produced works which interrogate the medium of dance aiming to dissolve barriers and support the art form as an evolving entity. It would not be so far off to say that dance arts are in some danger of gradually disappearing from our culture. This exhibition examines the role of document in the preservation and enervation of modern dance.

Through spoken word, digital video, photo arts, painting, sculpture, sound and c.d. rom the installation focuses on interpreting media and its role in the animation of new ideas and works. In the context of this exhibition, our original designs reveal themselves with resonance to the theatre yet inhabit a new world in the gallery. In Suddenly we have taken the opportunity to remix our past and create new works which are released from their original structures.

The nature of our laboratory is to invent and create spontaneously. This allows us to add and subtract elements of the past and to reveal new artistic connections throughout the run of the exhibition. This non-static format reflects the nature of dance to move.

The content of SuddenlyHISTORY is therefore ever-growing and changing, providing Suddenly Dance Theatre a permanent umbrella for the discussion of dance and media.
