Suddenly Dance Theatre is pleased to announce our brand new performance award program UNODANZ will be a part of Intrepid Theatre's 11th UNO Festival of Solo Performance, this May 22, 23, and 24th, 2008 in Victoria, BC, Canada. To reflect the spirit of dance-based invention UNODANZ creates another quality performance opportunity for independent dance artists to showcase their work within a juried international festival.

This year's inaugural program features three distinct dance works:

AVENUE OF BUTTERFLIES (20 mins, Live; Toronto)
Conceived and Choreographed by Karen Kaeja
Performed by Lisa Milloy

Bare Handed (26mins, Dance on Film; Belgium)
Directed by Thierry Knauff
Choreographed and Performed by Michèle Noiret

AVENUE OF BUTTERFLIES (20 mins, Live; Toronto)
Conceived and Choreographed by Karen Kaeja
Performed by Lisa Milloy

A tiny image of butterflies begins to emerge through the dancer's articulate skin – through undulation, sequencing, collisions, and release. In seconds are extremes of freedom and captivity, stirring the desire of spontaneous flight. A leading creator of Canadian contemporary dance, Karen Kaeja's (Toronto) AVENUE OF BUTTERFLIES is performed by dancer Lisa Milloy. With an original score by Edgardo Moreno.

Bare Handed (26mins, Dance on Film; Belgium)
Directed by Thierry Knauff
Choreographed and Performed by Michèle Noiret

As with our ROMP! Festival, we are showing in UNODANZ the best of the world's dance cinema. Our audiences have come to enjoy viewing live dance and dance on film in a single program. BARE HANDED is a poetic dance film of uncommon beauty. Thierry Knauff has created a bridge between dance and cinema, freely inspired by Joseph Noiret's text and his daughter Michèle Noiret's choreography. With light and shadow as her partners, Ms. Noiret approaches the world created by her dance, confronts and captures it. She immerses herself in this world and eventually loses herself in it. In this way the rhythm of dance joins the pleasure of pure cinema in fluid, dream-like harmony.

SONG (25 mins, Live; Toronto)
Choreographed by DA Hoskins
Performed by Danielle Baskerville

Choreographer DA Hoskins has created a new work to premiere at UNODANZ featuring his long-time collaborator Danielle Baskerville. SONG paints the portrait of the dancer's life as a cinematic journey – through text and movement, the work grounds itself by knowing at its heart the character of the story, the truth, the fiction, and the path of memory. Featuring a soundscape by Gilles Goyette. Audience's will remember seeing (or hearing about) Baskerville's blazing performance in DA Hoskins' Hard Candy at our 2006 Romp! Festival.
