Suddenly Dance Theatre's 20th ROMP! FESTIVAL OF DANCE welcomes this year’s Artist-in-Residence DAVID EARLE (Guelph). A major influence in the world of dance, David will teach classes, create and share new works with the community. At the Metro Studio Theatre, our mixed international program IN THE MELTING POT features the outrageous environmental work by HOYEON KIM (South Korea); with DAVID EARLE (Guelph); NAMJIN KIM (South Korea); and MAHAILA PATTERSON-O’BRIEN (Vancouver). Audiences can bring a picnic to our free outdoor program ROMP! IN THE PARK featuring BALLET VICTORIA returning to Beacon Hill Park. In a 2-week Creative Residency, Suddenly Dance Theatre’s DAVID FERGUSON will collaborate with South Korean artists HOYEON KIM, GUNWOO JUN, JUNGHA LIM with an in-studio artist talk and showing.

MIXED INTERNATIONAL

One show only! Our mixed international program IN THE MELTING POT features an outrageous environmental work by HOYEON KIM (South Korea); 'Ladder to the Moon' by ROMP! Artist-in-Residence DAVID EARLE (Guelph), 'Brother' by NAMJIN KIM (South Korea), and 'L I L A C' by MAHAILA PATTERSON-O'BRIEN (Vancouver, BC).

 

The evening is topped off with CAKE ON THE STAGE delivered with delicious harmonies by THE MILLIES. Audience members are invited onto the stage to mingle with the artists and eat our ROMP! Festival cake!

DAVID EARLE (Guelph, Ontario)

Our 2017 ROMP! Artist-in-Residence David Earle comes to Victoria from Guelph, Ontario with dancers DANIELLE BASKERVILLE and MICHAEL ENGLISH to teach classes, create, perform and share new works with the community.

 

MIXED OUTDOOR PROGRAM

Our free outdoor program ROMP! IN THE PARK returns - ONE SHOW ONLY! Audiences are invited to enjoy diverse dance styles in the City of Victoria’s core garden oasis Beacon Hill Park. Performances are at the Cameron Bandshell (central west side off Douglas Street) an open-air venue surrounded by trees with bench seating and ample space to lay out a picnic blanket. 

 

Featuring: BALLET VICTORIA (Victoria), with DAVID EARLE (GUELPH) and HOYEON KIM (Seoul).

INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION

Suddenly Dance Theatre's DAVID FERGUSON first worked with HOYEON KIM as introduced by Hyoseung Ye during their 2016 Dance Victoria Chrystal Prize awarded 'We are Diamonds' project. For two weeks, David and Hoyeon will further develop their creative relationship, with dancers Gunwoo Jun and Jungha Lim. An in-studio artist talk and showing is TBA.
