ROMP! in the PARK: Free

Over two consecutive weekends, the 19th ROMP! FESTIVAL OF DANCE premieres Joshua Beamish's solo collection LONE WOLF; unleashes Meagan O’Shea's Occupy-inspired WE DON’T NEED ANOTHER HERO; features an international cast of dancers and writers in our returning series PRESENT/TENSE 10 (topped off with CAKE ON THE STAGE); introduces a new, free outdoor program ROMP! IN THE PARK in Beacon Hill Park; plus we'd like you to meet our 2016 ROMP! Artist-in-Residence Hyoseung Ye from Seoul, South Korea.

Highlights:

JOSHUA BEAMISH (Vancouver)
JOSHUA BEAMISH (Vancouver)

ROMP! Audience favourite JOSHUA BEAMISH returns to the Metro Studio to premiere LONE WOLF, an evening of solos with choreography by Beamish, Vancouver’s Noam Gagnon of The Holy Body Tattoo/Company Vision Impure and Toronto’s Ame Henderson of Public Recordings. "...Beamish seduced the music’s ascending and descending notes with controlled and articulate phrases in the style of neoclassical ballet. Playfully, he flirted from the choreography’s structure – jutting out his hip, cocking back his head and even dangling his leg off the stage – tempting the audience with greater intimacy...."

MEAGAN O'SHEA (Toronto)

(note: nudity)

Meagan O’Shea takes over the theatre with WE DON’T NEED ANOTHER HERO, a provocative dance-theatre work inspired by the Occupy movement. Part performance, part communal catharsis, part experiential spectacle - HERO is a poetic metaphor for life, told through story, dance, and an immersive sonic experience. “Stunning images that demand the entire attention of the audience.”

FESTIVAL COLLABORATION

In our returning series PRESENT/TENSE 10 writers read selections of their work while dancers improvise - to the sound, syllables, and multiple meanings. Each dancer is only given the first and last line of the written work before stepping onto the stage – to create an electric collaborative laboratory. The evening is topped off with CAKE ON THE STAGE delivered with sweet harmonies by The Millies.

HYOSEUNG YE (Seoul, Korea)

Our 2016 ROMP! Artist-in-Residence Hyoseung Ye comes to Victoria from Seoul, South Korea with dancers Hoyeon Kim and Min Jin Kim to perform as well as work in-studio with Suddenly Dance Theatre’s David Ferguson supported by his recent Dance Victoria Chrystal Prize-winning project ‘We Are Diamonds’.

A special in-studio showing of Hyoseung Ye’s TRACES along with a glimpse of Ferguson/Ye's international collaboration-in-progress will be presented (limited seating).

MIXED OUTDOOR PROGRAM

The ROMP! Festival welcomes a new, free outdoor program ROMP! IN THE PARK in which audiences are invited to enjoy diverse dance styles in the City of Victoria’s core garden oasis Beacon Hill Park. Performances are at the Cameron Bandshell (central west side off Douglas Street) an open-air venue surrounded by trees with bench seating and ample space to lay out a picnic blanket.

Featuring: BALLET VICTORIA (Victoria), MEAGAN O’SHEA (Toronto), and HYOSEUNG YE (Seoul).
